A gentle quiet has settled in Jakarta, the streets have noticeably emptied and business big and small have closed down for the week of Idul Fitri celebrations. Many close friends have already made the journey home to their hometowns to spend this season with family and loved ones, finally taking the time to get caught up in this once-a-year time of reflection, forgiveness, and re-energizing family ties.
(Oh, and before you say "But that's not a photo of Jakarta!" Indeed, it is a beautiful photograph of Intramuros, Manila - but it captures the essence of what I'm talking about... Besides, I am, afterall, Filipina too!)
For the first time in many years, the Kismadi menagerie is also experiencing a time of change. Our beloved home carers - Nde, who has been part of our family since I was 14 - and her daughter, Nyai - who joined us three years ago - have gone home to Bogor for both Idul Fitri as well as Nyai's engagement! It was a nice surprise to see how Nyai has blossomed into a mature young woman, beautifully transforming into a lovely, intelligent and wise 18 year-old. Nde has done extremely well in bringing Nyai up. And we have been blessed to have the two of them take such good care of us and our creatures!
While waiting for their return after the holiday break, we have been adjusting to a new housekeeper... one who is trying to get a grip on the clicking wheels of the living machine that keeps our household going. It's been challenging for all, trying in some ways, but also eye-opening. The beasts (four legged and have taken to the adjustment quite well), while Ibu and I have had some trying moments. But things are slowly settling down and hopefully all will carry on smoothly until Nde and Nyai come back home to their second home here.
Interestingly, during the month of Ramadhan -a month of fasting and reflection - a number of those dear to me have gone through their own reflection journeys. One experienced much turmoil in his relationship, and for him I wish for blessings of tranquility and peace of heart and mind. Another has been desperately searching for true love, only to find herself faced with conflicting messages from the one she hoped might be the one. For her, I wish for patience and the willingness to listen with her heart to what the Almighty has in store for her... it will be a journey worth waiting for, it always is. Rushing into what we want (NOW!) often misleads us from the path ahead.
Then today learned of my little sister's decision to finally break from the turbulent journey she kept on struggling to stay on, despite the stumbles and falls and walls she ran into. For her I wish a thorough healing of the heart, a cleansing of the soul, and a life journey ahead that is filled with sunshine. Your little one deserves a shining, happy mama! Bless you for taking the bold and hard decision to let go.
